Nevada STEM Framework

The Nevada STEM Framework describes research- and evidence-based elements of high-quality STEM schools. The Framework was created to communicate the journey and vision for Nevada's aspiring and STEM schools, and contains attributes and descriptors for a continuum of schools: exploratory, developing, established, and model. OSIT encourages use of the Framework as a tool for self-assessment or roadmap for the expansion of STEM education.

What you will find in the Framework

The Nevada STEM Framework contains the State's definition of STEM, and a note regarding STEM versus STEAM. The document also contains Governor STEM School evaluation scoring information. The Framework contains attributes that describe STEM schools, and are organized into three categories:
1. The School
2. The Classroom
3. The Community
Each category contains 3-5 attributes and their accompanying sub-attributes. Attributes are described along a continuum of exploratory, developing, established, and model. Finally, the Framework contains an Appendix of suggested artifacts that might demonstrate the attributes of the Framework. Artifacts can be used to conduct or defend a school's self-evaluation.

What is an Exploratory STEM School?

The school is interested in STEM and is exploring STEM education. Some teachers may be researching STEM education, local resources, or trying STEM in their classroom. The school might be starting a STEM club or annual event. Overall, the school does not yet have a clear, unified understanding of high-quality STEM education.
Schools rated as Exploratory overall do not receive the Governor's STEM School Designation.

What is a Developing STEM School?

The school is creating expectations and systems to support the expansion of STEM education. STEM is beginning to be taught regularly through STEM blocks, specials, or days. The school is developing a vision, mission, and common understanding of STEM at the school. Buy-in among staff and the community is growing.

What is an Established STEM School?

The school has created systems and expectations for STEM education, and has trained staff on STEM pedagogy and content. STEM learning is integrated into the school day for all students. STEM professionals and community members support the school's STEM programming.

What is a Model STEM School?

The school is refining and enhancing STEM education at the school. All students experience transdisciplinary STEM integration and regularly explore STEM career pathways. The community is an integral part the the school's STEM program. The school is known to the larger community as a high-quality STEM school.
