GME REQUEST FOR APPLICATION GRANT ROUND VII

Nevada consistently ranks among the most underserved states in most areas of healthcare delivery, both in urban and rural settings due in large part to shortages of physicians. The State, through Graduate Medical Education New and Expanded Program Grants seeks to meet its growing healthcare needs and grow its physician workforce by increasing support for graduate medical training.

University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine -Awarded $870,433 for Pediatrics Residency Training
The establishment of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) Pediatric Residency Training Program will combine the goals outlined in their mission statement of the medical school and its primary clinical institution, Renown Health. UNR wants to make a genuine difference in the health and well-being of the people and communities Renown serves through the building of key relationships, integrating care, and managing population health. UNR also wants to improve the health and well-being of all Nevadans and their communities through excellence in education and postgraduate training that produces global leaders in medicine, clinical care, safety, innovation, and research with a local, national, and global impact. UNR has built the structure and recruited faculty to support their training program. Their plan is to recruit four residents per year for a total complement of 12 pediatric residents once accredited by the ACGME this Fall 2022. They believe there are foundational pieces needed to ensure the success of their program at the onset and into the future including: a Chief Resident, an Associate Program Director, equipment to improve and update their simulation lab and curriculum, and financial support for their teaching facility. UNR believes these are valuable components to recruiting, teaching, supervising, and mentoring residents.

University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Medicine - Awarded $2,408,961 for Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship Program
The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine (KSOM) at UNLV proposed the addition of an internal medicine subspecialty fellowship program in hematology/medical oncology. Hematology and medical oncology are subspecialties of internal medicine that are offered at UNLV in combination as a fellowship training program. Hematology is the internal medicine subspecialty that focuses on the care of patients with disorders of the blood and bone marrow and the lymphatic, immunologic, hemostatic and vascular systems. Medical oncology is the internal medicine subspecialty that involves the diagnosis and management of benign and malignant neoplasms. UNLV will seek Acceditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approval for the program at their next meeting in January 2023. Based upon the timeframe for the application process, UNLV says it is possible that the first entering fellowship class would be two PGY-4 level fellows beginning as early as July 2023. Because hematology/medical oncology is a three-year fellowship, there will be a total of six fellows enrolled once the program reaches full capacity. This translates to six additional physicians in-training caring for patients in the community under the supervision of attending physicians.

University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Medicine - Awarded $1,955,790 for Rheumatology Fellowship Program
Rheumatic diseases are the leading cause of disability in the United States. Early and appropriate treatment of arthritis and other rheumatologic conditions by a rheumatologist is essential to preventing permanent disability and avoiding costly procedures. The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine (KSOM) at UNLV is proposing the addition of an internal medicine subspecialty fellowship program in rheumatology. Rheumatology is an internal medicine subspecialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of medical diseases of the joints, muscles, and connective tissues. UNLV will seek Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approval for the program at their next meeting in January 2023. Based upon the timeframe for the application process, it is possible that the first entering fellowship class would be two PGY-4 level fellows beginning as early as July 2023. Because rheumatology is a two-year fellowship, there will be a total of four fellows enrolled once the program reaches full capacity. This translates to four additional physicians in-training caring for patients in the community under the supervision of attending physicians.

Dignity Health - St. Rose Dominican Hospital - Awarded $2,600,000 for Family Medicine Resident Program
St. Rose will establish a residency program for Family Medicine at their San Martín Hospital to educate and retain physicians and prepare them to address the healthcare needs of the community, especially those who are under-resourced and historically marginalized. Dignity Health received ACGME accreditation in early May 2022. They will train 8 residents in the first year, FY24, and will add 8 residents in FY25, and 8 in FY26 to achieve the full program complement of 24. They will build out space at San Martín to provide the necessary infrastructure for the residents. Residents will also train at their Siena Campus, a Family Medical Residency clinic adjacent to San Martín, the St. Rose West Wellness Center, and various clinical training sites in the community. The Family Medicine residency program will train more physicians to address the significant health needs of the community. Dignity health believes that the Family Medicine Residency clinic, working closely with the Wellness Center to ensure a continuum of care, can improve community health and keep people out of the hospital by addressing social determinants of health.

Dignity Health - St. Rose Dominican Hosptial - Awarded $678,632 for Internal Medicine Resident Program
St. Rose will establish a residency program for Internal Medicine – Primary Care Track at their San Martín Hospital to educate and retain physicians and prepare them to address the healthcare needs of the community, especially those who are under-resourced and historically marginalized. Dignity Health expects to receive ACGME accreditation in September. They will train 4 residents in the first year, FY24, and will add 4 residents in FY25, and 4 in FY26 to achieve the full program complement of 12. The residency continuity clinic training site will be next to the St. Rose Wellness Center (which provides free disease management and community health programs) on the second floor of the Dignity Health North Las Vegas Neighborhood Hospital in an underserved area. Residents will also train at the St. Rose – Siena and Rose de Lima campuses, Dignity Health Medical Group Multispecialty Clinic and Henderson Primary Care, and primary care and internal medicine specialty clinics. The residency program will train more primary care physicians to address the significant health needs of the community. Dignity Health believes that the continuity clinic, working closely with the Wellness Center to ensure a continuum of care, can improve community health and keep people out of the hospital by addressing social determinants of health. They also feel that physicians who practice in the ambulatory setting with general internal medicine training can fill the primary care gap as well as alleviate some subspecialty needs by caring for more complex patients in the primary care setting.
